School Storyline Research
Your privacy, protected by design
Looking closely at how a school presents itself can feel exposing, even when the intention is generous. So it's worth being plain about what this research does with data, and what it doesn't.
Three principles hold throughout the School Storyline Research Project:
Public information only
The study works from what a school has already chosen to make public. Nothing private, nothing behind a login.
Anonymous reflection
The survey records only the position you choose, never a name, email, or contact details.
Private reports
Each report is password-protected and shared privately with the school it describes.
The research uses public information only
Every observation is drawn from materials a school has chosen to make public: its website, prospectus, published policies, newsletters, and similar materials anyone can find.
Nothing is accessed behind a login, and no private systems, internal documents, or confidential records are used. The project observes the public story a school tells, not the institution behind it, and not the individuals who work there.
It isn't an inspection, an audit, or a judgement of educational quality. It's an observation of what becomes recognisable to someone meeting the school for the first time.
The reflection survey collects no personal details
If you're invited to reflect on a school through the nine-statement survey, the only thing recorded about you is the position you choose.
- We never ask for, and never store, your name, email address, or any way to contact you.
- You choose the position that best describes you, for example a parent, a teacher, or the head.
- Responses appear in a report by position, not by name.
Some positions, such as the head, are held by a single person, so a response shown against that position reflects that person's view to anyone who already knows who holds the role. Even then, we record nothing beyond the position itself, and keep no way to contact you.
The report is private
A school's Storyline report is password-protected. Only someone holding both the link and the password can open it.
Reports are served from a dedicated research address, and every report page carries a "noindex" instruction that asks search engines not to list it, so reports don't turn up in search results. Each report is shared privately, by link and password, with the school it describes, as the opening of a conversation, not a verdict.
How information is stored and secured
Everything is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), so information can't be read as it travels.
Because the survey records only a position, with no name or contact details, there's nothing in it that names you or that could be used to reach you. Reports sit behind a password.
If you've shared contact details with us so we can send you a report or stay in touch, we use them only for that. We never sell them, and we never pass them to anyone else.
Your choices
Taking part is always voluntary. You're free to decline, to stop at any point, or to ask a question before you decide.
If you'd like a survey closed, a report withdrawn, a school left out of the research, or any details we hold about you removed, tell us and we'll do it.
